2014 Toyota Corolla vs 2014 Ford Focus

2014 Toyota Corolla vs 2014 Ford FocusWhen looking at compact sedans for you or your family, you will have a range of options, including the 2014 Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus. Although these are from different manufacturers, they are very similar compact sedans in terms of the basics.

Both vehicles have FWD, but their transmission options vary. The Focus comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission, but you can select a six-speed automatic. The Corolla, on the other hand, comes standard with a six-speed manual with the option of a four-speed automatic. The cars are also within several hundred dollars of each other in terms of value, but looking at other details shows that the 2014 Corolla takes the lead.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is complicated to compare as it depends on the engine and model combination for each sedan. The fuel efficiency for the Ford Focus ranges from 26 to 28 miles per gallon in the city and 36 to 38 mpg on the highway, with the addition of the SFE trim with automatic transmission that gets 28 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The ranges for the standard models of the 2014 Toyota Corolla are similar, but slightly higher with 27 to 29 mpg in the city and 26 to 38 on the highway*.

Based on those numbers, the Corolla would only have a slight lead, but if you opt for the Corolla LE Eco, you will get 30 mpg in the city and 40 to 42 on the highway*, giving the Corolla a firm lead in terms of fuel efficiency. The Ford Focus does have the option of an electric vehicle that doesn’t use gasoline and is more environmentally friendly. The downside of this, however, is that to take advantage of its projected range of 76 miles, you will need to find charging points, which are growing in number but still challenging to find.

Standard Features

In terms of standard features, the 2014 Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus are fairly even in their base models. They both offer an auxiliary audio input jack, USB/iPod connection, and one-touch windows. They have a similar number of additional but different features. The Focus has a rear sunshade, built-in hard drive, and air conditioning with climate control. The Corolla, on the other hand, has Bluetooth, hands-free calling, power exterior mirror control, and configurable driver modes.

Safety Features

Despite being neck and neck in terms of standard features, the 2014 Corolla pulls ahead in terms of safety features. Both sedans offer a range of standard options, including child seat anchors, airbags, traction and stability control, and child safety locks. While the Focus only adds blind spot monitoring to the list of shared safety features, the Corolla adds an engine immobilizer, active head restraints, brake assist, and more.
