Learn Local History From The Fauquier Historical Society

Here in Warrenton, we’re surrounded by history. Formative moments in our nation’s past occurred all around us in Virginia, and Warrenton has also contributed its fair share of historical figures. The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail serves as a time capsule containing articles from the region’s history, and you can visit the site right here in town to learn all about key moments and people from Warrenton’s past.

Museum Exhibits

The Fauquier History Museum is home to a variety of enlightening displays and exhibits. When you visit, you might explore the past through an exhibit focused on subjects that reflect both local history as well as the cultural climate around the nation. The Equal Suffrage League of Virginia exhibit details the history of one of the most impactful suffrage efforts in the South. This group made strides to educate the public on women’s suffrage and advocated for the ratification of the 19^th Amendment in Virginia. The museum also has a detailed exhibit on Warrenton figure William “Extra Billy” Smith, who tried his hand at everything from agriculture to politics, combat, and law. He served on the Virginia House of Delegates and even spent some time practicing law in California during the time of the Gold Rush. Other ventures in the life of Extra Billy include the construction of a transportation line from D.C. to Georgia.

Events at the Museum

Beyond the exhibits, the Fauquier History Museum hosts events throughout the year. In the springtime, the museum puts on its annual yard sale, and in October, you can embark with the museum on a ghost walk tour. In November, scouts are welcome to the museum for Scout Day, complete with a scavenger hunt and a unique patch commemorating their time at the historic site.

Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail is located at 10 Ashby Street, Warrenton, Virginia 20186. Hours are subject to change, but the museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 11 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. Keep in mind that the museum closes on these holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Admission rates are subject to change, but the museum has varying prices for adults, seniors, military servicemembers, students, children age six and older, and children under six years old.
